Agreed Frank and Len. I’d like a copy of that paper when it gets written.

Fw: HTM Promotion

Dear Michael,
Although our Discussion Group provides supportive comments to members and facilitates constructive feedback, it unfortunately misses one of his important missions that is to channel insights and inputs on a given topic for a certain period under the coordination of one or two “topic moderators”. The moderator (s) would have to present the main focal [...]

Fw: my turn to seek your help

Hi Michael,

If you promote HTM, the result will be:

Longer Equipment Life
Lower equipment costs
More reliable technology
Reduced risk of injury or death
More effective staff
& Better patient care

How can that be self promotion?  I think creating a position paper or white paper that explains the benefits of HTM, and to be fair, outlines [...]

Re: Greetings from the long lost INFRATECH administrator

Björn,

Thanks for your input. It also gives me the opportunity to thank Jennifer. Your respective experiences sound like many others in developing countries, especially in Africa.

I would like to add on the description you provided on the “disease” and causes for the poor recognition and acceptance of HTM and CE in the health system. Particularly, [...]

Re: Greetings from the long lost INFRATECH administrator

Dear Jennifer,

I think you are quite right about the fact that clinical engineering and health technology management receive little attention from the media and from healthcare decision makers.

Why is that considering that any health care facility deprived of medical devices would have to cease its activity ?

I think this is global problem, possibly more [...]

How to advocate the inclusion of the technical professionals in the decision process?

Dear Mara et al.:

Good to know that you are trying to set up an equipment policy for Bahia.
Twenty years ago, such a policy was established for the state of Sao Paulo
in the same country (see article attached). Elements of that policy was
apparently adopted in some other Brazilian states, as well as in some other
countries [...]

how to advocate the inclusion of the technical professionals in the decision process?

Mara,

A good tool that you may want to consider using for getting started on a state level healthcare technology policy is the manual “Practical Steps for Developing Health Care Technology Policy” by Caroline Temple-Bird, Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, Brighton, 2000. ISBN 1-85864-291-4,143 pp.

Although not perfect, and perhaps missing the regulatory [...]

how to advocate the inclusion of the technical professionals in the decision making process

Thanks for your contribution Mara.

For your information and interest, in Hong Kong, biomedical engineers
hold/have held key positions, including Director, Deputy Director and Chief
Engineer, in a government department called the Electrical and Mechanical Sevices
Department _www.emsd.gov.hk_ (http://www.emsd.gov.hk) (which includes the
Health Sector Services) and their engineers have been active in the Biomedical
Engineering Division of the [...]

how to advocate the inclusion of the technical professionals in the decision making process?

Dear Mladen

The Journal and HTM showcase is an excellent proposal and I’d be more
than happy to help if I can. Perhaps a link with the IET’s AHT webpage, or
realigning that resource too, would be timely. Others have expressed
interest verbally as well.

how to advocate the inclusion of the technical professionals in the decision process?

Calil
Our discussions are aimed at empowering African HTM professionals through the creation of national professional associations “appropriate” training=
institutions and other continuous professional development initiatives.

I would be interested in being associated to the project with some other
fellow African professionals I would recommend. The participation of some African professionals in this project would help cover [...]

how to advocate the inclusion of the technical professionals in the decision process?

Michael

The issue of leadership skills that has been raised by Andre is important.
We need professionals who are able to understand not only technical aspects of their work
but implications of their service at ‘political’ level. They need to have a broader
perspective on issues. That way they are able to articulate their ideas and how
they are an [...]

how to advocate the inclusion of the technical professionals in the decision process?

Michael,

Here in Brazil we are trying to attract to the biomedical and clinical engineer congress the staff of the Ministry of Health; the objective of this movement is to put lights on the problems related to biomedical equipments and make a national discussion seeking for solutions for these problems.

In Bahia, my state, we just [...]

how to advocate the inclusion of the technical professionals in the decision process?

Michael,

Thanks to remind us to keep that question as a debate focus.

I would refer to my previous input on that issue to continue to suggest a “Coalition for Building Leadership for HTM professionals in Africa”.

In the past weeks, I was honored by having moderated a discussion within a group of professionals on how [...]
