Canadian equipment donation organizations?

Hi all,
Friends of mine at a medical school in Canada are hoping to
donate medical equipment from the hospitals they are currently doing rotations at.
I’ve advised them on some of the common donation pitfalls and what
questions they should be asking, and sent them a copy of the ACCE and WHO guidelines
(which I understand are currently undergoing [...]

Re: Is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies an ethical concept ?

Dear Binseng, Don and Colleagues
Binseng – well put. In an earlier e-mail (dd 4 Nov) I also went
fishing with my pointers to the Alma Ata Declaration and, more
recently, the work of Peter Singer and colleagues, but there were no
Infratech ‘biters’. We should not have a mindset of doing ‘for others’ but
doing ‘with others’.
This brings me to Don’s [...]

Re: Is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies an ethical concept ?

Binseng,

I agree with you.
I feel that if we expanded our definition of technology to include processes, methods, and problem solving skills
(not just limit the definition of technology to devices and 1s and 0s) the whole orientation of the discussion would change.

Re: Is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies an ethical concept ?

Dear Colleagues:
I am not sure whether I am qualified to make ethical judgments due to my total ignorance in the subject.  So please forgive me if I veer off a bit from the central theme.
I feel compelled to observe that it is interesting to note the absence of feedback from the “victims,” i.e., the people [...]

Re: Is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies an ethical concept ?

Hi all,
Great question and there is great value in encourageing a discourse around it.  The question of appropriate technolgy comes down to the opportunity cost that is foregone (with limited resources spending money on health interventions A, C, D,… means that funds are not available for other options, X, Y, Z, ….).  Therefore one needs to be [...]

Re: Is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies an ethical concept ?

Hullo Len
You will perhaps not be surprised that I am very pleased with the current interest in the matter of approrpiate healthcare technology and the fact that the 2010 seminar will be on this topic. I do not expect to attend the seminar but I wish you very well in its organisation.
Are opinions [...]

Re: MULTINATIONAL – STUDY ON MAINTENANCE OF SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE IN WAEMU COUNTRIES

Hi Ronald
The document you attached is the Evaluation Report from  the funding
institution.
I was one the experts in the early stages of this study. I have most of the
reports (expert reports=2C interim reports=2C phase reports) especially
the diagnosis reports&nbsp=3Bfor the health sector in all the eight countries.

Re: Is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies an ethical concept ?

Dear Ismael,
Many thanks for the valuable points you have made. I share your hope that
there will be a convergence and that there will ultimately be a similar
and acceptably high level of healthcare provision for all citizens of the
world. It will be a slow journey with many problems to be overcome and we must
all do our best [...]

Re: Is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies an ethical concept ?

Dear Ronald,

Many thanks for your response and for listing some of the factors which
need to be taken into account. You have righted pointed out that there are
differences in healthcare provision in Europe and we all know that there are
vast differences in provision in the developing world from extremely basic to
quite sophisticated.

Very best wishes,

Re: Is Appropriate Healthcare Technologies an ethical concept ?

Dear Rob,

Many thanks for all the valuable points you have made. When I use theword
“appropriate” I am using it in the sense of “suitable” or “proper”
(definition 1 in the Concise Oxford Dictionary). Further, I mean that we should
provide the best possible healthcare solution taking all circumstances into
account.

Very best wishes,

Len Cornish
