Re: Standards and norms applying to healthcare technology

Antonio,
Thanks for sharing these documents. But, African regional
representatives are still lacking on GHTF. How can this be made right?

Adesina

Re: AHT2010 Seminar ON-LINE DEBATE: How safe is your hospital ?

Dear All,
Let us participate in Len’s call for debates on publications from the AHT2010 seminar.
Mladen has taken the good lead and raised many important aspects of “HTM” issues. I would like to chip in some personal thoughts on Mladen’s message.
First, on the reuse of injection syringes, the keyword in medical devices is risk vs [...]

Re: AHT2010 Seminar ON-LINE DEBATE: Managing medical devices effectively

Dear Mladen,
Many thanks for highlighting these issues. As you may know, each
Government (NHS) hospital in the UK is required to have a Medical Devices Management
Committee with a representative from each of the stakeholder groups so
that the whole “medical devices management cycle”, from the initial
specification to final obsolescence/disposal can be dealt with [...]

Re: Standards and norms applying to healthcare technology

Adesina,
In addition to Trevor’s comments:
Since 1999 Medical Device regulatory authorities from Latin America and the Caribbean have attended the GHTF Conference and participate as observes in the GHTF Study Groups (SG).
The final Documents of the five SG have been translated into Spanish (in Portuguese only SG2 final documents) and are used as a reference for [...]

Re: AHT2010 Seminar ON-LINE DEBATE: How safe is your hospital ?

Dear Len
Professor Donaldson’s talk (or at least your precis of it) raises a number of moral and ethical issues which would be worth debating and discussing. In many developing countries, re-use of syringes is a given. If single-use were enforced, many patients may not receive the treatment they need (since there would be no money [...]

Re: Standards and norms applying to healthcare technology

Dear Yadin
Some comments in response to your e-mail, at the risk of raising the
(f)ire of our dear GOM:
My own view is that it would be difficult to ‘incorporate’ the NIH
definition of BME into the CE definitions if these are to have global
applicability, since many CE practitioners do not have a background in
‘biomedical engineering training’ (one [...]

Re: Standards and norms applying to healthcare technology

Trevor,
Thanks for the information. I exchanged communications with the GHTF
Secretariat. Discussed with a lady known as Sabah Khan at the office. It
was during the time for their annual general meeting in Canada last
year. I found out that there is no African representative on board. I
was planning to make NEPAD Council to join one of the [...]

AHT2010 Seminar ON-LINE DEBATE: How safe is your hospital ?

Dear INFRATECH colleagues,
A major theme at the recent AHT2010 seminar _www.theiet.org/AHT2010_
(http://www.theiet.org/AHT2010) was patient safety. The seminar was opened by
Professor Liam Donaldson, Chair of WHO Patient Safety. In his Keynote Speech
“Does ‘Appropriate’ compromise patient safety?” he highlighted a number of
potential problems, such as the recycling and resale of used syringes and
lack [...]

Re: Standards and norms applying to healthcare technology

Adesina, colleagues:
We are unsure of the “head office” to which you refer, as GHTF has no permanent “head office”, instead a rotating chairmanship (currently held by Therapeutic Goods Administration(TGA), Australia).
GHTF is NOT a private/industrial alliance, rather it is (and always has been) a joint effort of regulators and industry. See the GHTF website (www.GHTF.org). [...]

Re: Standards and norms applying to healthcare technology

Dear all,
I recently carried a brief review of GHTF (Global Harmonization Task Force) activities and
contacted their head office. Currently developing countries issues are not on
agenda and its constitution is made up of western countries. Correcting
this anomaly this also be a focus for this group. I understand that it
is a private/industrial alliance and might not [...]

FW: ARE WE BEING PROFESSIONAL? – A GOM’s VIEW

> Dear Infratechers,

> At the risk of once again being ignored and written off as a grumpy old man (GOM) well-past his sell-by date, I have to say that I find much of the current exchanges on INFRATECH about definitions of HTM terminology appallingly inward-looking, written by the ‘Office of Navel Contemplation’, one might [...]

Re: AHT2010 Seminar ON-LINE DEBATE: Designs for appropriate technology devices

Motorcycle ambulances (such as www.eranger.com)
The eRanger is a motorcycle sidecar configuration vehicle expressly
designed for use as a referral ambulance in rural settings. Designed to
transport a patient and pillion passenger safely over conditions that
would require a 4×4. It’s an appropriate solution to many situations
where cheap transport is needed over distances of between 10 to 60km.
If you [...]

Spanish:
Yo prefiero decir que la Ingeniería Clínica y la Ingeniería Biomédica están bajo el paraguas de la Bioingeniería.
