Mike,
In addition to the project by Northwestern Students that Mladen
referred to,
you’d also want to check out the designs by Rice students, MIT
students, Design that Matters and Van Hemel.
I believe these have all been tried in the developing world.
There are also designs by Duke Students and Rutgers Students and
several others
that I don’t believe have been tried [...]

Dear Mike&All
I would say that I am looking for the day on which engineers will be able to give more comfort to babies? than now.
From my point of view of the incubator should be able to give, in addition to heat, the humidity control. Not only engineers but also the doctors and nurses need to [...]

Dear Mike/All
This is a great case study for healthcare technology innovation for under-resourced environments. There seem to be many threads for discussion: needs assessment, spares (availability and affordability), technical support, etc, – many of which no doubt have been identified and
discussed in various fora - but I would like to respond with an ’appropriate’ anecdote.
We have a partnership [...]

Mike,
Concerning the low-cost infant incubator, you might want to check with Stephen Delaporte of Aniteal Labs in New York. They were working on a design for an infant incubator in May 2008. Here is the communication I received from them: “I would like to introduce you to Stephen Delaporte of Aniteal Labs in Uniondale, NY. [...]

>Assuming that by “box” you mean the Plexiglas enclosure used in typical
modern incubators, it may actually be harder to duplicate this box than
the electronics, especially in developing countries.
I’ve seen locally made boxes out of wood and perspex. It’s a lot easier
to get hold of these materials than the electronics.

the project, not considering the academic part?
Sorry – I should have made myself clearer. The idea is based on the
experience of a student who visited a hospital in Cameroon, seeing a
shortage of incubators and ones that didn’t work well, some home-made,
some old [...]

Dear Mike:
For an academic project I guess it’s OK. Which is the ultimate goal of the
project, not considering the academic part?
What country do you refer to? The UK? It doesn’t seem to me since components
should not be so difficult to source, from RadioSpares or elsewhere. So, you
must be referring to another country, perhaps an underdeveloped [...]

Mike,
Some thoughts:
Assuming that by “box” you mean the Plexiglas enclosure used in typical modern incubators, it may actually be harder to duplicate this box than the electronics, especially in developing countries.
Although these enclosures seem simple, the fundamental features of visibility, accessibility to the neonate, safety, noise dampening, heat conduction, resistance to humidity and fogging, and [...]

Hi folks,
I’m wondering about projects for next year that I can set for my
undergraduate students.
One idea I have is a “flat-pack” containing all the electronics needed
to construct an incubator for babies, the philosophy being that it’s
easy to build the box in country, but difficult to source the
electronics. Has this been done before? Would it be [...]

Paul,
We posted your appeal for help on the Drager C2000e on BiomedTalk. The first response concerned available parts. Contact me if you’d like the information.

Hi Paul,
Our teaching hospital has a dozen of these. We have experienced only one error 6 which was one of several error messages observed. Our contact with the company indicated that error was a general error message that could be the cable, board or other source. Sorry for the lack of information on this, but [...]

Our Hospital purchased four C2000e infant incubators last year from Draeger’s local agent here in Trinidad & Tobago.
From very early (within six months) we started getting regular “Controller Failure errors. Each time the Tech Support from the local Agent would come in and replace the controller PCB. However, the problems reoccurred repeated.
We spent two technicians [...]
