Helping with designing a low-cost infant CPAP for use in developing countries

To all,

A former co-worker of mine at the ECRI Institute, Jeff Heyman, is now at MIT working towards an MBA and MS in Engineering Systems. He’s currently in a product design class and working with a nonprofit
to design a low-cost infant CPAP for use in developing countries. Given your experiences with medical [...]

The Clinical Engineering invisiblety

Dear Friends
It is very interesting that we are thinking about launch an INFRATECH
Awards, despite it would be useful to strength our position on the health
system, I think that we need to start far behind. I totally agree that we
need this kind of initiative, however we will be talking to ourselves…
first, we need to achieve another [...]

Fw: my turn to seek your help

I agree with Michael on providing a simple message that is meaningful to all stakeholders.
Having been in=0Athe clinical engineering field for about 15 years now, I myself am not always fully clear of all the terms, concepts and proposed tools and solutions being tossed back and forth by international experts. So how can we [...]

my turn to seek your help

Dear Colleagues
Some comments, if I may, in response to recent postings.
1. How to ’sell’ HTM and engage important role-players and stakeholders
We have adopted two complementary strategies: one linking HTM with Quality of Care as first outlined in the 2001 Institute of Medicine report (i.e. quality care having criteria of safety, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness, timeliness and equity) and the [...]

Fw: my turn to seek your help

Frank, Len, Billy, Andre, George:
Thank you for the encouragement to explore ideas to promote HTM.
I should first clarify that what I have in mind is not a white paper as outlined by Frank and I am not
a proponent of promoting only HTM.  Rather, my scheme is to present three key functions that are [...]

my turn to seek your help

Bravo!
Frank said it very well.   We have come a long ways from the fixit shop days.  And HTM is the plateau that all of clinical engineering should be on these days.    And anything that leads toward that achievement is good clinical engineering promotion – not self promotion.

Promotion of HTM

Agreed Frank and Len. I’d like a copy of that paper when it gets written.

Fw: HTM Promotion

Dear Michael,
Although our Discussion Group provides supportive comments to members and facilitates constructive feedback, it unfortunately misses one of his important missions that is to channel insights and inputs on a given topic for a certain period under the coordination of one or two “topic moderators”. The moderator (s) would have to present the main focal [...]

Re: Greetings from the long lost INFRATECH administrator

Björn,

Thanks for your input. It also gives me the opportunity to thank Jennifer. Your respective experiences sound like many others in developing countries, especially in Africa.

I would like to add on the description you provided on the “disease” and causes for the poor recognition and acceptance of HTM and CE in the health system. Particularly, [...]

Re: Greetings from the long lost INFRATECH administrator

Dear Jennifer,

I think you are quite right about the fact that clinical engineering and health technology management receive little attention from the media and from healthcare decision makers.

Why is that considering that any health care facility deprived of medical devices would have to cease its activity ?

I think this is global problem, possibly more [...]

how to advocate the inclusion of the technical professionals in the decision process?

Dear Andre Mboule
Sorry by the deleyied answer but I was in and out my office and miss some
messages from Infratech and other people.
It will be a pleasure to have you and the professionals you recommend to
help us in this project.
The IFMBE has several WOrking Groups and one of them, which I am the

Advocacy for Capacity Building for HTM professionals

Dear Michael et al.:

I think you misunderstood Andre’s last point. He was not advocating to
create and promote a *separate *group to develop skills for HTM/PAM, just
focus the efforts in this direction.

While it is an important and necessary activity, I am afraid that it is not
sufficient. As I wrote many years ago, it is [...]

Advocacy for Capacity Building for HTM professionals

Dear ALL, I look forward to your participation in the discussion of what I
posted last week “how to advocate the inclusion of the technical
professionals in the decision process?”
Thanks
Michael Cheng

Dear Andre,
