Baobab Health frequently hosts volunteers in Malawi. Baobab focuses on
creating touchscreen based decision support tools as well as open source
tools for interfacing with lab equipment (especially pediatric and HIV
focused equipment).
Which reminds me, does anybody on this list have any experience getting
electronic CD4 results out of an EPICS CD4 count machine?

Hi Ismael,
Being involved in consulting activities in Clinical Engineering and having worked in some 16 African countries, I could provide you with some insights if you wish.

Thanks Robyn. Yes, we worked with Tom Judd and 4 other faculty with ACCE in our first medical equipment management workshop in Kosovo in October 11-15, 2004. Thanks to ACCE this was a very successful workshop.

Ish,
Please also list earthMed in your article.
In addition to biomeds traveling with our clinical teams, we are also
aspiring to missions that focus exclusively to clinical engineering support.
We also encourage our biomeds to participate with other organizations.

Greetings Ishmael,
This is Billy Teninty of International Aid. As Robert Malkin informed
you, we do use volunteer biomed technicians in several of our programs.
A group of biomed techs assisted us in the Aceh Medical Equipment
Service Center in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, during our response to the
earthquake and tsunami of Dec 26, 2004. Our intervention in Aceh began
with [...]

Ismael,
Consider adding Engineering World Health (www.ewh.org) and
International Aid (www.internationalaid.org) to your list.
Also, I edited an issue of the Institute of EE Engineer’s Medicine and
Biology magazine about, in part, organizations that sponsor overseas
activities:
RA Malkin, “Engineering Humanity” Special Edition, IEEE Medicine and
Biology Magazine v25(3), 2006, 16-19.
There is a short list of relevant organizations in the book [...]

Robert,
Thanks for the useful information.
My article is aimed for the March/April or the May/June issue of AAMI’s
BI&T journal. The emphasis of the short article will be how volunteer
assignments (focusing mainly short term assignments) can enhance the
careers of engineers and technicians, what to expect, and how to
prepare.
At some point I would like to chat with [...]

Hi Ismael.
About 12 years ago I developed and submitted a project proposal for UNIDO,
which encompassed all regions in Tanzania, for sustained Biomedical
Engineering/medical equipment maintenance. There have always been issues of
losing trained BME’s and this addressed that issue.
Two organisations that could assist are UNIDO, out of Vienna, Austria and
Project HOPE in Virginia, USA. I [...]

Hi,
I am writing an article about overseas volunteering opportunities for
biomeds and clinical engineers. If anyone knows the names of
organizations that organize and sponsor these kinds of activities,
please let me know.
Thanks.
